Do you remember the Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi throwing a shoe at George W. Bush? The story and images were spread all over the media and internet. Brilliant entertainment. Though probably frowned upon by some, it must have been an inspiration to quite a few in the world as well.

Well, no we fast worward to Mongolia 2009. There is just a new President elected. Elbegdorj. And he is happy, celebrating his win with a crowd on Sukhbaatar square. You would expect people might throw their hat in the air. But then suddenly a guy in the crowd throws a shoe at Elbegdorj. He is captured by the police and later explains (from Mongolia Web News):

I was drunk and at one point I had to throw my shoes. I did not have any intentions. Just wanted to throw. When President George W.Bush visited Iraq, he was thrown a shoe as well.

It is always rather pretentious to make fun of other one’s language abilities, especially because i lack in them considerably in myself. But sometimes things are just funny enough to pass them on.
This picture here is the backside of the entrance ticket to a National Park, the Terelj Park in this case. It conveniently gives a list of services provided to visitors in the park. Most interesting is point 3, where it says the park is….

To provide with information, brochure booklets, warning and garbage

When we enlightened our loyal driver on the issue, he ousted one of his high shrieking laughs, opened his window again and shouted at his friend the national park ranger while pointing at the ticket: “It says: We give you garbage!”

But there is one enthusiast who has dedicated a web site to the Ulaanbaatar Metro, or Metroo as it is called. Here is a picture of the Zuun Urt station that is featured on the website, but also a subway map is digitally available. The guestbook is another feature on the site, with some interesting comments from both believers and non-believers.

!! – For those not so aware of the public transport situation in Mongolia – there is reason to doubt the actual existence of the subway.
The website on the purely fictional UB subway is made by Yumzhagiin Oodarghal and as can be seen in the guestbook many people found it realistic enough to believe it, while others took amusement in continuing the joke – !!
